It's cold out, it's December and I should be reviewing this in say.. June and not now but I just got back from a hot vacation and now all I can think of is Summer weather now. Camping Buddies is a Golden Ale by Rebellion Brewing out of Regina. It's described as Light, Malty, Golden and Delicious. 4.2% ABV
This is the kind of craft beer someone like myself would likely take on a camping trip, and with a name like "Camping Buddies", it's obvious. The design on the can gives off a retro Saskatchewan Parks Dept kind of vibe to it - it's been over 20 years since I've last camped in Saskatchewan (shoutout to Kenosee!) but I do recall Saskatchewan loved the use of browns and yellows on their signs way back when. Now on to the beer..
Appearance: Wasn't quite what I expected. I expected a clear blonde-coloured ale. It's an opaque golden ale with a good amount of carbonation, a moderate thick white-beige head on top and it looks a bit more like a Belgian Tripel or a cloudy Pale Ale to me than a Golden Ale.
Aroma: Sweet with a hint of honey presence to it, moderate hop notes to give it a bit of a grassy aroma to it, tad grainy, slightly toasted, hint of Good Host Iced (TM) in there and a bit of a Pilsnery vibe at the end. Too soon to say that it's crisp but the aroma is quite welcoming.
Taste: Decent amount of hop-forward notes - somewhat grassy, hint of pine, hint of lemon. There's a bit of a graininess to it, hint of straw, subtle notes of caramel/honey for sweetness. Fairly dry to the palate, quite easy to drink.
Overall Thoughts: I had Rebellion's Cerveza on the balcony of my hotel room in Bucerías the other day and comparing the two.. for a lazy, just chill around and do nothing kind of beer I feel like this one is definitely my preferred of the two. The appearance is a bit deceiving with all it's cloudiness, but it's very smooth and easygoing. Only five and a half more months until camping season comes back..
