Review: Propeller Galaxy India Pale Ale

Propeller Galaxy IPAThis is a first for me. I've known about Dartmouth, NS-based Propeller Brewing for a very long time - probably close to twenty years but I've never managed to be able to sample any of their products. I still swear seeing their beer in Trailer Park Boys when they were still doing new episodes on Showcase, as well as Les Invincibles. I've had friends rave about the beer but yeah.. I just never got my hands on a bottle or can until now thanks to Quality Beer Store in Winnipeg. They had a good selection of products but since I'm on a budget, I could only afford one can and I went with their Galaxy IPA.

From the can: Propeller's Galaxy IPA boldly takes you into the delicious dimension of Vermont India Pale Ales. Hazy, hoppy and juicy - Australian Galaxy hops explore rich pineapple, peach, and tropical citrus aromas. Citra and Mosaic hops add undertones of tangerine and mango. 6.5% ABV

Appearance: Hazy orange bodied IPA with a thick amount of off-white head. The head diminishes rather quickly, leaving behind a bit of lacing on the glass, but only here and there, not everywhere. Looks like a solid IPA so far.

Aroma: Leafy, tropical, sweet IPA. I get a leafy hop presence right from the beginning, followed by notes of orange, pineapple, peach and lemon. Quite sweet and I almost want this as an air freshener, it's that tropical. Tad yeasty.

Taste: Quite a sweet, tropical forward IPA. There's a bit of a breakfast cereal vibe in there.. it's taking me a minute to think of it, Fruit Froot Loops! Notes of pineapple, peach, lemon, a bit of a graininess to it and a leafy hop presence at the end. The aftertaste is a a tad bit of breakfast cereal but without the sweetness, so pretty much toasted grains.

Overall Thoughts: Really solid IPA. It's been a while since I've had a Galaxy-forward IPA that I really enjoyed. It's sweet, tropical and yeah, reminiscent of Saturday morning breakfast cereal. I hope it won't be another several years for it to be the next time you see me sample a beer from Propeller!
