I don't review many Meads here even though I've been lucky enough to sample a few really good Manitoban Meads over the years. I'm the type of Mead fan who prefers a sickly-sweet dessert kind of Mead over a dry Mead but anytime I get to try a new (to me) Mead, I'm pretty happy!
Brat Cat Mead Co has been around around a year now but with me being in Brandon I don't get many opportunities to check it out except when I'm in the big city. I first tried out the mead at Devil May Care right after a Jets game in March and the mead definitely intrigued me, even though it wasn't the sickly sweet stuff I typically drank, plus it was nice to have something different than a beer for a change, my gut was full of beer that night.
Raspspspberry is a Raspberry Session Mead (5.0%) that is simply made up of water, eyast, honey and raspberry purée.
From the label: This raspberry-forward, honey-based beverage finishes dry with a purr-fect bite of carbonation. Soft and slightly sweet draws you in like a gentle pspsps... just like our cuddle bug tabby cat Fett. We only use locally sourced MB honey, because supporting local businesses is cool. Drink Mead. Help Bees. Support local.
Appearance: I just finished off a bottle of Pink Lemonade a couple hours ago and this is exactly what it looks like, except that this one has a bit of a fizz to it initially. Bright pink and opaque, little bit of carbonation in the body.
Aroma: My first impression was "Wow, quite tart up front!" - I was expecting it to be sweeter from the beginning but instead got more of a sharpness to it. The fruitiness of raspberries does pop up but it's yep, tart/sour. This brings me back memories of Nonsuch's Raspberry Sour a great deal, and if you know me, I'm not a Sour fan but so far it's agreeing with my nose. One final note, I do get a sweetness of honey pop out as it warms up.. I'm intrigued.
Taste: Okay, so if I was blindfolded and someone gave this to me and all they said was "Manitoba", I'd be convinced this was Nonsuch's Raspberry Sour. What I'm getting from this is a sharp sour fruitiness from the raspberry, a heavy dryness to the mouth, a little bit of tingling on the back of the tongue and a subtle sweetness of the honey popping up here and there but not in any way overpowering the raspberry itself. If you're a fan of Sours, I 100% say this is a must try.
Overall Thoughts: For being the non-Sour kind of person over here, I was hoping for it to be a bit sweeter but it works well. It's got a great punch of flavour, the carbonation tickles the entire mouth a great deal and the hint of honey sweetness is shy but nice and welcoming.
Here's my cat tax for those who actually read this review. These are my favourite two buddies, Whisky and Tequila
