Review: Skout Prost Festbier

Skout Brewing Prost FestbierI don't generally drive an hour one way to visit a brewery, but when it's a brewery that's not available in Brandon, it's a short drive and worth this visit. This time around I was in the neighbourhood, Moosomin, Saskatchewan for a friend's wedding a couple towns away, so it made sense to get a hotel room there and stop by Skout Brewing a few times.

Greg, the Flatlandbeer guy himself didn't even know that Moosomin was getting a brewery until weeks after my first visit in May.. and that guy has his ear tuned into the Sask beer scene more than anyone else.

I picked up a wide selection of goodies, some for people who wouldn't be heading to Moosomin, some for a bottle/can share, and me to drink or sample. Today's sampling is Prost, a Festbier that tops out at 5.7% ABV. A few days earlier they had their first annual Oktoberfest party called Skoutober and judging by the pictures I've seen, it was a huge blast!

Appearance: Opaque, orangey-copper brown. Moderate amount of carbonation in the body and a moderate beige head on top. The head diminishes pretty much immediately, leaving behind a slight bubbling on the side but that's it.

Aroma: It kind of brings me back vibes of what we considered craft beer to be back twenty years ago - This is reminding me of a classic OG Big Rock beer, kind of like a Traditional Ale. It's a sweet malt forward for aroma, a hint of pine, predominantly grassy for hops and a tad bit of nuttiness to it.

Taste: Definitely got a hefty caramel presence to it, followed by a good deal of nuttiness, there's also a bit of toast to it. Quite clean, slight bitter aftertaste but all in all inviting.

Overall Thoughts: I almost gave away this can to a friend so I'm glad I gave them one of my extras of something else instead. Solid Oktoberfest-vibed beer - it's not heavy nor is it light so it makes it a perfect beer for the changing seasons. Today it's 24C and likely the last day this nice until next year, so it was a perfect time to sample it.

For those driving down the Trans Canada Highway passing by Moosomin for any reason - travelling up to Yukon or road trip to Winnipeg for a Riders/Bombers game, Skout is probably one of the best places to stop for a quick stretch and pint as it's right off the highway.
