Review: Lowlife x Burdock Docklife Wild Saison

Burdock x Lowlife Docklife Wild Saison Today's review was part of a poll over on the BeerCrank.ca letting the fans and loyal readers decide what I should sample this week. The clear winner was Docklife, a collaborative Wild Saison brewed by Burdock and Low Life - two beers, aged apart, made together in two different provinces.

I had a recent trip to Toronto only a couple weeks before this beer came to my local Liquor Mart but I never had time to visit Burdock unfortunately. I have been craving Low Life's House Saison to the point that I asked if they local Liquor Mart could bring it in, I'd be willing to purchase a whole flat of it if I had to. Well, the following week not only did House Saison come back into stock, but Low Life also brought this beer with them. As of writing this, there's still something like five cans left in Brandon but I'll probably be the one to slowly buy them all up as I'm the only one in the area who apparently likes a nice dry Saison.. who knows?

The batch bottled at Burdock is stated to be 5.1% ABV but this one is 4.8% apparently

Appearance: Docklife gives off a loud PSSSST sound when opening the can, making you think it's possibly going to be a gusher - don't worry - it's a bit carbonated to the point bubbles are flowing on up but it doesn't cause for any clean up, phew!  The beer starts off with a moderate amount of snow white head but diminishes to just a very thin, microscopic ring of bubbles near the glass. Light carbonation in the body.

Aroma: The wild yeast gives it the funkiness that some people don't care for, but I grew on it over the years. It's got a bit of a farmer's cowhide gloves. There's a moderate oakiness to it, it's slightly tart with a red wine-like aroma to it, and a hint of lemony citrus at the end. Oh, I think I get a hint of pear in there at the end.

Taste: The funk is here again but it's more sweet than cowhide. It's got a slight sharpness of red wine, a moderate oakiness of the the barrel to give it well, a woodiness. There's also notes of lemon, a slightly leafy hop presence and a slight bubble gum presence in there, somewhere.

Overall Thoughts: I apologize to Low Life for not being able to deplete the Saison stock as fast as I could but there's just one thing.. Their Enjoy Lager may be one of my suggestions for one of the best new beers I've had this year.. and it's a lager! That beer has been routing my funds that were meant for Saisons and IPAs to.. this one lager!
