Today's sampling is One Great City's Mum's Root Beer, an alcoholic malt beverage that's 5% and 20 IBU
From the label: After all we've put our mothers through, who else could we name this beer after! Mum's is a nostalgic nod to the love that calls us all home. Embodied by the timeless Sailor Jerry heart tattoo, this Root Beer spiced ale blends rich, creamy flavours with the devotion and warmth of mother's embrace. A tribute to family ties and cherished memories, this comforting beer is a reminder that no matter where you wander, home is always in your heart.
Appearance: Pours pretty much like a Porter/Stout that's pitch black with some cola brown notes. The head is pretty frothy with a caramel brown hue to it. Not really fizzy but it gradually diminishes to absolute nothing, leaving only a few bubbles here and there.
Aroma: My first impression of this was that it was a Porter/Stout with Root Beer notes, is that a bad thing? Nope! It gave me a bit of a roastiness to it. The next time around I get more of the Root Beer, it's sweet - very sweet, notes of brown sugar, vanilla, caramel and a hint of black liquorice. It almost seems more cola-like for me but it's definitely got vibes of Root Beer here.
Taste: After the sweet, syrupy aroma I got, I was expecting that to be popping out for the flavour. No, this time around it's the notes of Porter giving off a roasted coffee profile right from the beginning. I get a bit of a sour taste to it instead of a sweet, caramelly, brown sugar taste. It's slightly sweet and there's a bit of vanilla but it falls flat otherwise.
Overall Thoughts: The more I sample it, it didn't improve in flavour. The aroma had bite but the taste did not. I wanted it be sweeter but not sickly sweet. As a Porter-ish beverage, the base of the beer is solid and definitely drinkable now that Summer has abruptly ended. I'll give this a try again in some time but doubtful I'll update this review.
