Review: Blood Brothers Shumei India Pale Ale

Blood Brothers Shumei India Pale AleThis time last month I was just ending a week long vacation in Toronto and Montreal. In hindsight I should have chose one place and did the entire vacation in one of those two communities.. but hindside y'know. I sampled a good deal of beers while in Toronto but didn't have time to go to many Toronto breweries.

One of the breweries I didn't have time to visit was Blood Brothers Brewing, so today I'm sampling their Shumei IPA. The beer is described as a a highly aromatic IPA exhibiting ripe mango and stone fruit notes. On the palate find hints of citrus and a refreshing bitterness on the finish. Serve alongside tacos, curries or beer battered fish with a squeeze of lemon. 7.0% ABV

Appearance: Thick with a full on orange juice body to it, no noticeable carbonation in the body and a very thick snow white head on top. The head takes a good couple minutes to diminish, leaving behind a nice white lacing on the glassware as it goes down, as well as when the beer is getting savoured.

Aroma: Classic juicy IPA vibes, summery. There's a really leafy hop presence that has a dank, alfalfay moderately bitter smell to it. Decently sweet and tropical with grapefruit, orange, lemon, pine. It has a New England meets North West kind of vibe to it.

Taste: The first thing I get from the taste is the overly leafy/floral bite with notes of pine. Good amount of sweetness, just like in the aroma - a tad bit of booziness, lots of grapefruit, orange, pineapple, melon, lemon. Creamy to mouthfeel, bitter and pear-like aftertaste at the end.

Overall Thoughts: I can feel it sloshing in my belly within moments of consumption. Dank, juicy, floral, bitter and sweet. A hop lovers' kind of IPA with an NE meets NW vibe to it.
