Review: One Great City Local Lager Light Beer

One Great City Local Light LagerToday's sampling is One Great City's Local Lager, a Light Lager that tops out at 3.5% ABV, making it one of the lightest beers in Manitoba at the moment. When I first saw the side of the slim can, it has a blue and white design, making me think (at first) that this was Michelob Ultra. Perhaps they did slim can and the colour profile to aim towards that demographic? Or perhaps it was just coincidence? I have no idea.

Appearance: Local Lager pours a rich honey/golden colour with a moderate amount of transparency through the glass. Moderate amount of snow-white head on top of the beer and a light amount of carbonation in the body itself. The label itself also makes me think like as if this beer could be for a beer league baseball team or something.

Aroma: The first thing I get is familiarity. What does that mean? It reminds me of nothing specific but it gives me back memories of some of the beers I was drinking twenty years ago.. a bit of a European lager vibe but also a slight sharpness that tickles the nostrils that remind me of how a Canadian lager used to be. It's decently sweet with notes of honey, there's a a bit of straw and a grassy hop profile at the end.

Taste: The taste is quite a bit sweeter than the aroma at first.. It's got a slight syrupy sweetness to it, a decent amount of grassy notes and a slight bitterness from the hops. There's also a bit of a bitterness from the hops lingering for aftertaste. At first I felt this beer was watered down but the more I'm sampling it I'm finding it's full of flavour, which is decent with it being 3.5% ABV

Overall Thoughts: I was going to say that the I preferred the aroma more than the taste.. but then I had a second, and then third sip and it grew on me. Very straight-forward and basic light/lite lager, not overly watery so it has the taste of beer some people want in this day and age. Full flavour for a light beer, lawn mower/BBQ worthy, all that jazz.
