Today's review is Beefcake Brut(us) IPA by Devil May Care Brewing. 6.7% ABV / 20 IBU
From the label: The following contest is scheduled for one fall. Making its way to the ring... from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Weighing in at 20 IBU, it's the Heavyweight Champion of The IPA World - Beefcake!
Be careful when you step into the squared circle with this one. It starts off deceptively dry, almost crisp. But then it comes in hard with the Green Bullet. After that, it's just a matter of time before you get hit with the Belma and the Wai-iti rounds out the combo. If you don't watch yourself, you'll be seeing strawberry, orange, melon, peaches... and while you're trying to figure out where the dark fruit and spice came from, you' in the Sleeper Hold. 1... 2... 3. Lights out. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. And now comes a really really bad haircut...
Appearance: Bright peachy-orange body with a light cloudiness to it. Good amount of off-white head on top that diminishes pretty quickly to leave behind a nice layered lacing on the glass and a sprinkling of bubbles on top of the beer.
Aroma: Sweet and fruity-forward IPA with notes of melon, orange and surprisingly strawberry. Hint of caramel maltiness, a tad leafy hop presence. Lastly, there's an aroma I can't pick up on but in the end it pops in my mind that it's a dark fruit vibe like the label states! It's almost like a black forest cake presence.. interesting.
Taste: Mildly sweet and malt-forward IPA with notes of caramel, hint of strawberry, melon, orange peel and lemon. Moderate amount of booziness to it, a hint of dark fruit and spice... like the aroma, almost a bit of a black forest cake vibe to it. A tad reminiscent of a DIPA so I'm not noticing overly floral or bittering hop presence to it. Fairly dry for mouthfeel and a slight fruity (pear) aftertaste at the end.
Overall Thoughts: Solid! Nice and sweet Brut IPA. I've been buying this pretty often ever since I first wrote this review, definitely growing on me!
Also, since I wrote this a few weeks ago, Devil May Care has announced that they have found a forever home for the brewery, located at 155 Fort St in Winnipeg, just a short walk from The Forks, the Via Rail Station and Canada Life Place, I can't wait to see the brewery in operation in coming months!
