Wow, the last time I reviewed anything by Barn Hammer Brewing was back when I was still writing my First Draught column over at the Brandon Sun, so wow.. that's been quite a while since my last review. Today I'm sampling Razzle Dazzle, a spiced cranberry Philly Sour brewed with orange zest & juice. I've never heard of a Philly Sour but it appears to be a type of yeast that works well in a Sour-forward beer. 6% ABV.
Appearance: Opaque with a reddish-pink raspberry jam appearance to it. Mild amount of white head on top that has a slight pink hue to it. The head diminishes rather gradually, leaving behind a sprinkling of lacing on the side of the glass.
Aroma: Sour with a hefty fruity presence to it. The dominant fruitiness is cranberry, while I also get a moderate amount of Christmas orange aroma to it, as well as a bit of a breadiness at the end. Lots of lemon.
Taste: Spiced? Yep, spiced. I get notes of cinnamon right from the beginning, followed by a hefty sour presence of cranberry and lemon. There's a bit of orange but not aggressive. The sour presence and the spiced notes linger for a good moment or eight.
Overall Thoughts: The spiced aspect of the sour is interesting. Sour with lots of cranberry and lemon. Moderate amount of orange. Definitely a bit different than sours I've had recently.
