The other day I picked up not one but two brand new meads! Manitoba is known for some of the best honey out there so I'm happy to see an increasing amount of meads in the province. I picked up Torque Brewing's Stoffel Mead as well as this, Bee Boyzz Winery & Meadery's Don't Worry Bee Happy Strawberry Carbonated Craft Mead.
From the label: Our Strawberry carbonated mead is made from local strawberries, absolutely refreshing and delicious! Best chilled before serving. May contain naturally occurring sulphites. Naturally Gluten Free, No Preservatives Added. 5.0% ABV
Appearance: Hazy and golden but with a pinch of a pinkish fruity hue to it. Mild amount of carbonation in the body, very light amount of white head on top, mostly clinging to the side of the glass.
Aroma: Sweet notes of honey, notes of strawberry. Light amount of floral notes to it - wildflower.
Taste: The first thing I get from the taste is something I didn't expect - for some reason it has a mild smokiness to it, I just can't get past the smoke-like presence to it.. I like a smoky stout but in a fruity mead? Not so much. Once I get past the smoke-like presence I get a bit of strawberry tartness to it with a bit of a jam-like profile to it, followed by a moderate honey sweetness to it. Tad fizzy on the palate with a dry mouthfeel and a very sugary aftertaste that lingers at the back of the mouth for a good while.
Overall Thoughts: I can't get past the smoke-like presence to it.. I'm not sure why it's showing up? Perhaps it's the strawberries? I don't know, I do get strawberries in the mead, which is giving off more of a tartness than sweetness. Very dry, sweet but yeah, somehow has notes of smoke, though it does diminish as it warms up a bit.
