There's only been a few times I've ever had spicy beer but surprisingly.. I can't think of one that I didn't enjoy. This one is a random pick-up while I was at the Quality Beer Store, I didn't really look at the label, just bought it because I haven't tried much by Abbotsford, BC's Ravens Brewing Co. Today I'm checking out Ravens' Two to Tango Mango JalapeƱo Gose.
Wonderfully balanced mango and jalapeƱo notes throughout with a bit of lime to bring it all together. And after a sip, you’ll be left with just a hint of heat." 4.4% ABV / 5 IBU
Appearance: Moderately cloudy golden body with a moderate amount of carbonation in the body. The head is incredibly light with a white hue to it, which diminishes pretty quickly leaving behind only a smidgen of bubbles at one side of the glass.
Aroma: ¡Muy caliente! This has quite a vegetal-forward aroma to it with notes of well.. you got it, jalapeƱo! There's a slight sweetness popping out from the mango and a hint of grassiness from the hops. Lots of heat popping out from this from the pepper, tingles the nostrils a tad.
Taste: This tastes like a wing sauce if it was turned into a beer, so take it for what you will. Myself, I like the taste of jalapeƱo that pops out in literally every sip, giving off a tingling heat sensation throughout the mouth and throat, as well as a bit of a vegetal taste that I can only describe as jalapeƱoes and leafy hops. The mango is there but it's mainly the sidekick to the jalapeƱo, providing a hint of sweetness.. but I wish there was more of it. There's a bit of a vinegar-like tartness, a bit of salt and a light graininess at the very end.
Overall Thoughts: This seriously tastes like a mild Buffalo wing sauce with a hint of mango to it. This definitely won't be something for most people but if you're someone who likes to try new and experimental beers, I highly suggest trying this. It's one of the spicier beers I've had and surprisingly smooth to drink.. until the heat hits. I'd definitely get this again, it's different and surprisingly enjoyable but I couldn't drink more than one in an evening.
