Spectrum Beer Co's Hot Pink Lemonade Sour is something I've seen at the Quality Beer Store in Winnipeg in the past, but not in Brandon as far as I know, but a few weeks ago a local pub started selling the beer on draught, and the local Liquor Marts started bringing it in as well.. so here I am to try it out!
From the website: Hot Pink Lemonade is a light and refreshing introduction to sour beer. The Lemondrop hops and fresh lemons provide a delicious tartness that's balanced by the addition of fresh raspberry juice. 5.0% ABV / 8 IBU
Appearance: Mostly-clear amber appearance to it, light amount of cloudiness to it. Light amount of carbonation in the body, while the head has 2.5 fingers full of frothy head foam that quickly diminishes to a light layer with a sprinkling of lacing the glass.
Aroma: Quite a lemon-forward sour with notes of lemon.. and uh, lemon. There's a bit of maltiness to it that gives it a grainery presence to it but there's not much coming out from this beer so far. Perhaps maybe a bit of melon at the end? I think there's something vegetal at the end.
Taste: Lemon, grass, herbal hops, bit of dough, and a tartness that pops up that is telling me there's something else there but it just leads me back to lemon. I want to say that I taste raspberry juice in here, but I really don't.. though it may be what I'm getting in the mouthfeel, but nowhere else. The aftertaste is leafy, a tad vegetal and a hint of lemon.
Overall Thoughts: Not what I was expecting at all. I've sampled more Farmery Pink Lemonales than most people, so I was expecting and hoping for a lemonade sour that was tart as heck but had a sweet fruitiness from the raspberries, this was just lemon, light citrus hops and a bit of grain to me. Not a fan. The raspberry should have been much more dominant in this sour.
