My buddy Ryan absolutely raves about Whitewater Brewing's beers - they're pretty good and now available in Manitoba through the Quality Inn Beer Store in Winnipeg. Today I'll be trying out their Peanut Butter Shake Peanut Butter Stout. 4.5% ABV
From the label: "This stout is everything you want it to be; chocolatey, peanut buttery goodness. With hints of cream and caramel, this medium-bodied sweet stout will remind you of a peanut butter chocolate shake."
Appearance: This stout pours a very very dark brown to near black, but before I can even see the beer there's a loooooooooot of head, like an insanely amount of head - thick, beigey head that takes forever to diminish so I can continue to pour the beer.
Aroma: Did the label tell you that it's a Peanut Butter Shake Stout? Well, it is. The first thing that pops out is the peanut butteriness of the beer - lots and lots of peanuts in this beer. The stout is also quite chocolatey and even has a bit of a creamy lactose aroma to it.. giving it that milkshake vibe the beer is supposed to have. There's also a bit of caramel in there and for some reason.. it smells a bit like if you're walking past a popcorn stand in a mall.
Taste: Sweet, very sweet. The peanut butter is the star of the show - it's thick, creamy, nutty, well.. overall it's peanutty! There's a good deal of milk chocolate in this beer to compliment the peanut butter, as well as a moderate amount of lactose to give this a true milkshake-like experience. Fairly dry on the palate, earthy hop profile that has a light bitterness that lingers for a quick second on the palate, oh.. and a bit of caramel sweetness.. a bit reminiscent of those Kraft caramel square you used to get in bulk at the grocery store.
Overall Thoughts: If you enjoy peanut butter and chocolate, I think this might be for you. For those who are allergic to peanuts, that sucks. It's creamy, very peanutty from the beginning to the very end, as well as has a good amount of chocolate. It's not quite like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, definitely more like a milkshake.
