A good friend of mine from ND gave me this beer when I was visiting back in July and now it's time to try it out.
With the name "Destihl", it seems more like a company that should be producing riding lawn mowers for wannabe farmers more than beer.. but here we are.. it's actually a brewery! Destihl Brewery is out of Normal, Illinois.. which makes it even weirder than it should be, more eerie than Eerie, Indiana.
Today, I'm checking out Destihl's Amra Mango IPA. The ber itself is advertised at 6.9% ABV, 55 IBU, and uses 2-row malt, flaked wheat and caramel malt 20.
Appearance: As soon as I opened up the 12oz can, it started foaming up, so there was beer everywhere! I cleaned it up and let the beer settle in the glass - it gives off an appearance of cloudy lemony-orange body with a good amount of carbonation, and a light amount of sediment throughout the beer. The head is thick, frothy and snow white but gradually diminishes just to leave behind a bit of lacing on the side of the glass.
Aroma: Sweet and tropical - notes of lemon, mango, pineapple. Expectedly, there's a decent amount of breadiness as there's a hefty presence of wheat and yeast in this beer. If this wasn't a beer, I'd say this would be a tropical, fruity sort of Danish.
Taste: I'm finding the beer's tropical presence isn't as dominant.. but this beer is likely 3 or months old as I acquired this beer in ND back in August, so it's definitely not fresh. There's a good amount of tropical sweetness here.. notes of pineapple, mango and lemon (and even lime!). There's also a bit of a gritty wheat presence that almost makes you want to eat some Ciabatta bread. It's alright.. but the hops and the fruit notes should be complimenting each other more in this beer.
Overall Thoughts: Mildly tropical with notes of mango, pineapple, lemon and lime. Light hop bitterness but mostly tropical. Nothing wowing here.. I wish they would try something else because there's 10000 beers just like this.. and the downside I'm finding is the aftertaste has a bit of an acidic "barf" aftertaste vibe to it. The beer isn't bad but that's what I'm getting. I don't know what else to say from that - Sweet and tropically, a bit bready, and a bit acidic at the end. Hmm.
