Tonight's beer is Dogfish Head Brewing's Chicory Stout and with it being -26C right now, a nice stout helps deal with the moody prairie winds in the cold cold dark Canadian winters. Dogfish Head hasn't been available in Canada for a few years now due to supply & demand, too much demand in USA for them to continue to sell in Canada so they pulled out of Canadian market possibly forever (or a few years).
Appearance: The Chicory Stout pours a very rich and roasted black coffee body with a burnt caramel creamed head that eventually changes colour to a cookie dough brown. This is a really thick stout, but aren't all stouts, really?
Aroma: The essences of chickory, roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, lightly bittered hops. Reminds me of the scent of walking into a family owned café, the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans being brewed is just oh so tempting, even for someone who hates coffee like myself.
Taste: A bit of a watery mouthfeel, some bitterness coming from the roasted malts and the coffee notes. Hint of a woodiness coming from the chickory, a bit of a hint of cream and sugar. It's tasting more like an iced coffee than a stout right now and I like that! Not much of a chocolate presence in here, but savouring this with a nice dark chocolate bar would be delightful.
Taste: A coffee based stout that's hard to remember that you're actually drinking a beer and not coffee, it's roasty, lightly sweetened, bitter, and leaves a coffee breath. It's a good stout but not amazing.. was hoping for more chicory in the flavour though. 5.2% ABV
