Day two of my beer advent calendar! Today's beer is Criminelle Stout Impérial By Micro-brasserie du Saguenay, which is also known as La Voie Maltée. The Criminelle Imperial Stout won an award for the BEST strong stout (at 10% ABV!) at the 2010 World Beer Awards.. so it's gotta be good!
Appearance: Dark chocolate, stoutlicious, dark, very dark, almost as dark as night. Head is a yellow-beige cream, not going anywhere what-so-ever!
Aroma: A mixture of chocolate, milky, only slightly roasted, not as bitter/coffee smelling as I would expect, quite light actually, especially for a beer of 10%. A bit too light in fact..
Taste: The taste makes up for the aroma as it immediately hits the taste buds and wows me. It has a chocolatey, roasted coffee, incredibly sweet, an alcoholic BITE and a bit of a bitterness that is reminiscent to.. je ne sais quoi.. oh yeah.. McAuslan's St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout. Back of the tongue has a bit of a very dark fruit tartiness (and the bitterness) and the bitterness lingers for the aftertaste.
Overall Thoughts: Maybe I've aged it too long (we know I didn't), but the dark bitterness to it isn't a flavour I particularly like but aside from the bitterness, the creaminess, the chocolate and coffee notes are very appreciative. La Criminelle Stout Impérial has 10% ABV so it'll warm me up on a day like today, bottled on October 20, 2011 at 13:06 so over a year old now!
La bière a un nez discret de réglisse noire et de voilette. Saveurs de café et de chocolat noir. Très racée par son caractère. Has an aging expectancy of 5 years!
