Appearance: A nutty brown with a red-caramel hue, half a finger of cookie dough/beige foam.
Aroma: This cranky beer blogger isn't cranky what-so-ever.. it has a pungent sour cherry aroma overflowing and spilling? into my nose! This is almost like a fruit wine, almost like a nice merlot as well. A bit malty, acidic and slightly vinegary.
Taste: Whoa there.. that's one sour beer! It's quite a dessert-themed beer. It's not too sour, but enough to give me goosebumps. It's sour cherry with a bit of rich oak. Incredibly sweet, yet very delectable. Simple, but sweet!
Overall Thoughts: This beer didn't need much introduction, it's a sour cherry beer - it's DAMNED tasty, especially if you are looking for a dessert beer in lieu of Kriek or Unibroue Ephemere Cassis. This beer, in fact, as soon as I opened 'er up, reminded me substantially of another Belgian beer, Kasteel Rouge, which is no longer available in Manitoba. Kasteel Rouge was a very sour, sweet and cherry-filled beer. Compared to Kasteel, Duchesse de Bourgogne has more of a nice rich dark Belgian ale appearance (compared to a faux-wine for Kasteel), and Duchesse is not as near sour/tart. The Duchesse de Bourgogne (a Flanders Red Ale) costs $3.33 before tax, and has an ABV of 6.2%, so savour this with some cheesecake sometime!
