Today's sampling is Runner's Reward: Paul's Saison. A Rye Saison brewed by Oxus Brewing made for the after-party of the Paul Wawryko 5k Memorial Run.
From the can: Cheers! To getting the most out of life. Say yes to plans with friends, taking spontaneous trips, staying for one more round, putting a few more miles on the road, and don't save the good stuff. 4.5% ABV
It's been a while since I've reviewed anything by Oxus, which is a shame as not only are they some of the best people I know, but they also make some of the most underrated beer! So I'm very excited to try this, being a big Saison fan and all.
Appearance: Pours a cloudy golden body with a heavy amount of carbonation in both the body but also the head - I get a very fizzy carbonation from the beer that has a heavy thick snow-white head on top that diminishes a good deal over a few minutes but leaves behind nice white lacing on the glass.
Aroma: The beer starts off a bit grainy with bit of a bite from the Rye malt, slightly peppery spice, a faint sweetness, a hint of clove and lastly, a hint of bubble gum.
Taste: A tad bit of earthiness right to start it off, followed by a moderate Rye-ness to the beer - a bit of black pepper-like presence and a slight woodiness to it. There's bit of citrus sweetness in there, a bit of bubble gum, slightly straw-like, and a hint of clove at the end. Very approachable and no funkiness to be seen compared to a lot of Saisons I've had in recent memory.
Overall Thoughts: Smooth, the kind of Saisons I fell in love with in 2011-12. It's citrusy, has a bit of spice to it and could be enjoyed at any time. Everything about the beer makes at least myself think - life's short, enjoy it while you can. There should be no more "hey we should hang out sometime" but never actually put effort to do so, also no more "I want to travel"/"do something new" but think "nah, that's something I'll do in the future.. Life's TOO short. I think Paul would've been very happy with how this Saison turned out.
