Review: Container Fever Dream Belgian IPA

Container Brewing Fever Dream Belgian IPAIt was five years ago this month when I made my first ever trip to Vancouver. My buddy Chris made sure to get me to visit as many breweries as possible, and in the end I went to twentyish breweries in three days. That was one of the funnest lil' biercations I've had so far and there's two breweries that stood out the most - Barnside Brewing, which had opened only days ago, and Container Brewing.. a brewery with an entirely shipping theme to it, perfect for Vancouver and its port history!

Since that biercation, I visited Vancouver again a few years later and kept ending up at Container, their beer just appealed to me... IPAs, Barrel Aged Stouts.. beers Cody likes.

Today's sampling is Fever Dream Belgian IPA. 6.5% ABV

The enigmatic Belgian IPA is a brew that threatens to drive any brewer to madness as they seek just the right hops to complement the complexities of Belgian yeast. This dreamy brew features a combination of Styrian Goldings and Amarillo hops, delivering earthy spice notes, followed by an expression of bright citrus.

Appearance: Mostly-clear with a very every so faint cloudiness to the beer. The appearance is honey-amber with a moderate amount of carbonation in the body and a moderate amount of snow-white head on top. The head sticks to the glass a great deal to give it lacing, but there's not much for bubbles otherwise.

Aroma: Sweet, a bit floral for hoppiness, pretty nutty, slight hint of bubble gum.

Taste: A nutty, toasted malt forward ale with a bit of honey sweetness, lots of hop presence to give off pine and then an aggressive bitterness in every sip afterwards. There's a slight booziness at the end but that's about it.

Overall Thoughts: Belgian IPAs are something that rarely work out well and this is another example of it. The malt is nutty, grainy - there's a bit of sweetness of honey but the hops don't seem to compliment anything, unfortunately.
